About this object

Victorian sterling silver presentation salver of circular form with foliate shell border and four legs in fine condition. Presented to Charles Throsby Smith (1798-1876) of 'Bustle', Wollongong.

Inscribed: 'This salver together with a tea and coffee service was presented to Charles Throsby Smith, Esq. JP by the inhabitants of Illawarra as a mark of their esteem and respect, for his urbanity and kindness of heart manifested during a long residence amongst them and as being one of the pioneers in proving the value of that district. 14th February 1855.'

The salver was donated to the Illawarra Historical Society by descendants of Charles Throsby Smith on 13 January 1999. The salver was owned continually from 1885 until 1999 by the Smith family.
