In Järmut’s work there was very much a Pop Art-influenced approach to ceramics. Pop easily translates into humor, which is a conspicuous element in Estonian ceramics at large. Despite this, Järmut’s fragmented, traumatized vessels and figurative elements are decidedly sobering if not exceptionally grim: the paradox is quite fascinating. In a survey of Estonian ceramics, neither this kind of dark edge nor a strong focus on the figure are particularly common, making Järmut’s work seem all the more enigmatic.
