Heritage in the Limelight

The Cross Series - partial set - slide 125/230

About this object

The Cross Series was made by the Salvation Army's Limelight Department, a very early and significant manufacturer of lantern slides in Australia and arguably the producers of Australia's first feature-length productions [See : Jolly, 'Soldiers of the Cross: Time, Narrative and Affect', Early Popular Visual Culture 11:4 (2013): 293-311]

This extensive set includes life model scenes, backdrops and actors, also used in 'Heroes of the Cross', a 1908 remake of 'Soldiers of the Cross' (1900), both produced by the Limelight Department. The later is held at the National Film and Sound Archive, Canberra.
