Subject and Association Description

In 1888, 15 year old John Aitken immigrated with two sisters from Scotland to Victoria, BC. In 1897 he married Ellen Brown from Sooke and they moved to the Gulf Islands. He became interested in photography and on his journey to the Klondike gold rush in the 1898 he photographed himself outfitted in arctic gear and a copy of the famous Eric Hegg image of the Chilkoot Pass. The family remembers that he returned from the Klondike with a gold nugget for his youngest daughter, Annie. After the death of his wife, he moved with his young family to Mayne Island, operating a grocery store until 1923 and then moving to Highfield Farm until 1955. His photographs document Mayne Island settler life. See Elliott, Marie: "John Aitken - Amateur Photographer" in BC Historical News, Vol 17, No 3, 1984.
