About this object

The large framed Irish Land League propaganda-style poster depicts the 1881 trial of Charles Stewart Parnell and other leaders of The Irish Land League in Dublin.

They were arrested on 13 October 1881 and imprisoned under a proclaimed Coercion Act in Kilmainham Gaol for "sabotaging the Land Act", from where the No Rent Manifesto, which Parnell and the others signed, was issued calling for a national tenant farmer rent strike.

The stylized poster depicts a standing Parnell addressing an unseen English judge. The piles of books and papers on the judge’s bench represent the might of English law. People involved in the Land League are pictured in the poster.
The defendants named at the bottom of the poster are:

(Mr J.G.) BIGGAR, M.P.; Mr T. BRENNAN; Mr CHARLES STUART PARNELL M.P.; Mr T. SEXTON M.P.; Mr J. DILLON, M.P.; Mr J.W. SPILLANE M.P.

The poster has been decorated by gold decoupage and then framed.
