About this object

Medallion commemorating the 29th International Eucharistic Congress, September 6th to 9th 1928, Sydney, with original packet.

In 1928 Sydney hosted the largest Catholic gathering to date in this country – the International Eucharistic Congress. It began at St Mary’s Cathedral and included a huge procession starting at St Patrick’s Manly and heading across the harbour to the city. The pageantry reflected the confidence of the Church after years of sectarian division in the 19th century. It is likely that members of the White family where among the many thousands of Sydney Catholics who attended this event. Ruth Wall from Neutral Bay attended and received this commemorative medal. Interestingly, it shows St Mary’s Cathedral with spires that were yet to be completed.
