The Union Oil, Soap and Candle Company was formed on the 1st of July 1882. Approximately 18 months later the company established an oil and tallow works on a six-acre site near Ann's Bridge, Otahuhu (Westfield). The company later changed its name to Taniwha Products Ltd. For many years yellow blocks of Taniwha laundry soap were a familiar product in New Zealand households. In April 1979 Taniwha Products Ltd closed its Westfield factory. The buildings lay vacant for some years before being demolished in November 1995.
