About this object

[en] This piano has straight, vertical, square section legs, and a simple rectagular panel in the upper front cover — a style very similar to that of CIM-004, quite common in uprights from the 1920s to the middle of the 20th century (see also CIM-006, also by Bechstein, and CIM-007). The lower front cover has two horizontal rectangular panels, and a straight-line spiral ornates the sides of the keyboard shelf — two decorative features also found on CIM-006.
Bechstein was able to combine large scale production with a high level of workmanship, which granted their pianos a reputation of excellency. Their sound was distinct, ‘‘velvety’ and somewhat ‘thinner’ in the bass’ (1) than the more brilliant Steinway sound. Among their uprights, this model 8 was ‘acknowledged as among the finest ever done’ (1).
