A potter at work

About this object

A potter at work at Phillip's Pottery, Torrington Lane, East-the-Water. Henry Phillip's and James Redcliff owned this pottery in the 19th century, and sent thousands of parcels of their wares across to Newfoundland and Virginia. When Ireland had a glut of butter, Bideford potters obliged with hundreds of pots made especially for them! This pottery closed in 1916, the last of many, on both sides of the River Torridge. There is a good selection of their sgraffito jugs in the Burton Museum.
