About this object

This beautifully embroidered large rectangular silk shawl is from the late 1800s. It is embroidered with many sprays of flowers and stems, each spray coming from a large central flower – mainly worked in satin stitch and stem stitch, with a border design of linked embroidered single sprays. All embroidery is in brilliant vivid colours - red, purple, gold, green, blue and mauve. The wide knotted fringe is in very fragile condition.
Donated by E Ellis in 2009 the shawl belonged to her Grandmother.
