Landscape with Green

About this object

Born in Russia, Helen Gerardia immigrated to the United States where she studied painting. Early in her career, she studied under the renowned art educator Hans Hoffman (1880-1966) and participated in the Abstract Expressionist movement. In the 1950s, she began punctuating her paintings with the geometric devices of Cubism with uncompromising black and white forms. By the 1960s, she incorporated more color into her works while continuing to emphasize negative space. The prints on view here are more graphic than Gerardia's painted works but nevertheless demonstrate her focus and inclination toward geometric abstraction.
