I attended the opening night of Fairfield - an unforgettable evening. Not only the music and the presence of the Queen Mother but also the huge chrysanthemums in the alcoves near the Sun Lounge.I still have the programme and the tickets and have been to every anniversary concert since then and will be at the 50th anniversary concert.
Equally unforgettable was the piano recital given by Arthur Rubinstein on 4th November 1962. My piano teacher took me and paid 12/6 for front stall seats. That was the first time that I had heard him live but continued to go to his recitals both at Fairfield and Royal Festival Hall for many years.
A less enjoyable memory of the opening night were the puddles outside the Halls - something which plagued Fairfield for many years!
