Photograph [44 of 47, McConnell Album]About this object
Photograph; 44 of 47 from the McConnell Album. A 1925 black and white photograph of Pleura Dam, the source of Mataura's town water supply. Mataura's town water supply officially opened on 7 October 1925. It was a big deal, with 500 people packing Bridge Square for the opening ceremony. The Town's children had the day off school, the Town Band provided the music and the main feature was a display by the Gore Fire Brigade. The Mataura Ensign's reporter provided a few facts: 'The total length of mains is 11 miles. Total number of pipes is 6024. Weight of pipes totals 500 tons. There are 294 special fittings and 92 fire hydrants. Ten tons of pig lead were used for pipe jointing. The intake is 244 feet above the reservoir. The reservoir is 200 feet above the town and holds 80,000 gallons. The town is 170 feet above the sea. The main pipe will provide 186,000 gallons every 24 hours. The intake holds 1,000,000 gallons. Water for a fire will be produced at 200 gallons a minute. The town pressure is 86lb to the square inch. The water climbs a hill 200 feet high to get to the reservoir. The critics said it wouldn't do it. The engineer said it would. It does'. For a full account of this project refer to pages 50 and 51 of our Society's book, 'Mataura City, of the Falls'.
The Album was commissioned by Charles McConnell, the then mayor of the Mataura Borough Council. It is now in the Gore Historical Society's collection and is held at the Gore Museum.
