Postcard, World War One

About this object

Post card; dated 13 November 1917 from trooper Hugh Brown to his nine year old nephew, Hugh Brown McConnell of Mataura. The card conveys a real sense of weariness but Hugh Brown was one of the lucky ones who survived the war. He resumed his teaching career at Tuturau after returning home. Hugh has signed the card as 'Bear'. According to Val McConnell, he acquired this nickname because 'he often got grumpy after a few drinks!'
