About this object

Badge; a copper-plated shield-shaped Barnardo Helpers League badge. It is a short service badge awarded to children who collected over a certain amount of money for Barnardo's NZ for 3 consecutive years.

The League - called The Young Helpers' League prior to 1934 was a voluntary organisation for mainly young people to join to support Dr. Thomas Barnardo's Homes for children. The League spread throughout New Zealand from 1914 with an emphasis on children's collective contributions through schools. Schools continued to be well motivated into the 1970's to earn wooden shields which had brass plaques added to them once groups raised a certain amount of money for Barnardo's.
