About this object

NSW Elector's Right Residential Qualification issued to John Robert Wheeldon [1861-1953] carprenter of Port Macquarie for the Hastings and Macleay Electoral District, Port Macquarie Division. The document is numbered '194598', signed 'John Robert Wheeldon' and dated 8 February 1901. It features a decorative scroll with the words 'Sic fortis Etruria Crevit' the NSW badge and a version of the Advance Australia emblem.

John Robert Wheeldon as born at Sydney and moved to the Macleay with his parents at the age of 3 months. After completing an apprenticeship in carpentry he spent some time on the Nambucca and Richmond Rivers. On returning to the Macleay he settled at Deep Creek and married Lilias Eva Lane of Kempsey in 1894. In 1900, he moved to Port Macquarie and purchased the cordial business, originally started by his mother-in-law, Mrs. C. Lane. Some years later Wheeldon conducted a general store in Gordon Street Port Macquarie, 'Wheeldon's West End Store'. In his later working life he returned to his trade, constructing many buildings on the Macleay and Hastings. He died at Port Macquarie, aged 92 years.
