In 1968 Port Macquarie celebrated the sesqui-centenary of its "discovery" by John Oxley in 1818. A committee was formed in 1966 to plan the celebrations and coordinate activities organised by various local organisations.
Members of the committee included Alderman L. Crisp, Dr. H. Hodgson,, Messrs R. Howell, C.C. Adams, H. Hutchison, C. Uptin, T. Gould, I. Meldrum, R. Pead, N. Anderson, Archeacon Warr, and Mesdames Gibson and Monck.
