About this object

Novelty pencil in the shape of an umbrella with a wooden emu head handle made from a twig with polished sides. The umbrella body is made of tapered turned wood with tacks nailed to the top to look like the tip of spokes. The top is finished with two small cotton tassels. The body is covered in a black cotton fabric which has been sewn and then nailed in place. At the tip is a metal piece which, when removed, turns around to contain a pencil tip.
