About this object

Photographer and author Bea Nettles was born on October 17, 1946 in Gainesville, Florida. Nettles has created an impressive and whimsical portfolio since 1970—working with photography, offset lithography, photo silkscreen, pinhole photography, drawing on many types of paper, mylar and fabric pages. Bea Nettles work has often encompassed her home life, birthplace in Florida, self-portrait, and ethereal landscapes and images—that conjure thoughts of ‘Alice and Wonderland.’ According to Bea Nettles webpage her work appears in over 26 public collections. Nettles work has appeared is the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian, National Gallery of Canada, the George Eastman House, and the Polaroid International Collection in Offenbach, Germany. Bea Nettles has also created many beautiful and thoughtful photography books—Flamingo In The Dark (1979), Corners: Grace and Bea Nettles (1988), Knights of Assisi: Journey through the Tarot (1990), The Skirted Garden: Twenty Years of Images (1990), Life’s Lessons: A Mother's Journal (1991), Complexities (1992), Grace’s Daughter (1994), Turning 50 (1995), and Memory Loss (1997). Nettles has had work in many other museums and created many more books than what is listed in the above lists. It is to be noted that the photographer/artist has also taught photography at the Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY., Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY., Tyler School of Art, and the University of Illinois where she is currently Professor Emerita.
