About this object

Todd Webb was an American photographer who documented both architecture and everyday life, as well as the American West. He was born in Detroit in 1905, and spent his childhood in both Detroit and a Quaker community Ontario, Canada. Although there are mixed reports of what he did in the 1920's, they all agree that he worked in finance before becoming a prospector in California during the Great Depression. Following this, he returned to Detroit and worked for Chrysler before attempting to find gold in Panama. While in Panama, he began taking photographs, and joined the Detroit Camera Club. Here he studied under Harry Callahan and Ansel Adams. In 1945, he moved to New York City and began working as a professional photographer. It was at this time that he became friends with important individuals in the industry such as Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keefe, Beaumont Newhall, Berenice Abbott, Helen Levitt and Minor White. He began capturing street scenes, and had his first solo exhibition in 1946. He received various contracts to photograph throughout the United States and abroad, and published a book of photographs of Georgia O'Keefe. He then spent his last years in Maine with his wife, continuing to photograph, until he passed away in 2000 at the age of 94. His images have been collected by various major institutions, and an archive of his work exists in Maine.
