'This head is one of the earliest examples of Molly Macalister's wood carving. Peter Tomory describes it and her kauri mask (no 16) as the two strongest works of New Zealand sculpture in the 1940's. It was her wedding present to her husband George Haydn.' (Johnston, 1982)
