About this object

Thomas McWhannell and brother James arrived in Queensland in 1861 from St Fillans in Perthshire, Scotland. After a period of squatting Thomas and James purchased the following properties: Headingly, Rodney Downs, Undilla, Stoney Plains and Oban.
Thomas was MLA for Gregory North from 1882-1888 and President of the Queensland Graziers' Association.
After his death in 1888. "Rodney Downs" was managed by his brother James until his death in 1904. From then until 1909 it was managed by their cousin Campbell Watters who had also come from Scotland. In 1909 the property was sold to the Shannon Family.
