The Far North Promotion Society (in early days known as the Far North Tourism Promotion Society) was in operation in 1969 and may date from the mid 1960's. Whilst details of its early History are scarce, it was operating the tourist information office until the responsibility for this was assumed by the Far North District Council in 1990, relieving the Society of a financial burden.
The Society produced a number of publications, some ephemeral and some of a more enduring nature, to encourage tourism in the Far North. It also undertook beautification programmes and organised Christmas street lightening, besides promoting individual events such as the Top Town competition.
