Rev John Duffus arrived in New Zealand from England, as a private citizen having left the church before emigrating. He bought land and went farming at Hihi, near Mangonui. On 11 Nov 1860, when a place of worship was opened in Mangonui Rev John Duffus offered his services gratis until a stated minister was found.

The baptisms listed were extracted out of Rev John Duffs's private book by Mr W I Ball on 15 June 1871.
