About this object

Boots worn by the character Jake ‘The Muss’ Heke in the film ‘Once Were Warriors’ (Communicado 1994). Jake ‘The Muss’ was played by Temuera Morrison. The soles of the boots have been specially built up to enhance Morrison’s height. ‘Once Were Warriors’, adapted from the novel by Alan Duff, told the story of an urban Maori family struggling with violence, alcoholism and poverty. It was the biggest grossing New Zealand film at the New Zealand box office upon its release in 1994-1995. The film was directed by Lee Tamahori and produced by Robin Scholes. The screenplay was written by Riwia Brown.
