About this object

This baton was presented to Signor Raffaello Squarise by the Government of South Australia, on 5 September 1885, on behalf of the Militia Band at Adelaide (of which he was Lieutenant Bandmaster). Raffaello Squarise (1856-1945) was born in Italy, moved to Australia in 1882 and came to live in Dunedin in 1890. In Dunedin he was a central figure of the local music scene between 1890 and 1930 - teaching, performing, conducting, composing and establishing bands and orchestras.
