About this object

Watercolour; an original, unsigned, watercolour painting, of Fyffe House, Kaikoura, dated to circa 1896, during the period when Joseph Goodall owned the property (1868-1911). The house appears from the front, with picket fence enclosing the verandahs and garden. A tree appears in the left foreground.

Joseph Goodall (1835-1911) transferred to Kaikoura as the district constable in 1865. He bought Fyffe House following the death of Catherine Fyffe (George had died the previous year) in 1868. The Goodalls made few changes to Fyffe House itself, apart from enclosing part of the verandah to form an office. It seems likely that it was the Goodalls who first established a flower garden in the space between the two wings of the building, and who wallpapered the interior for the first time.
