Catechism book, 'The Confession of Faith'

About this object

Catechism book, entitled 'The Confession of Faith; The larger and shorter catechisms, with the scripture-proofs at large...'. Printed by authority by Francis Orr & Sons, Glasgow, 1849. Inscribed to Elizabeth Fyfe on the title page and the first page, with other inscriptions detailing family history. An inscription by Elizabeth Laird notes that 'This book belonged to my brother Alexander Robert M T Fyfe who was both at the Mill of Balgray near Perth, Scotland in the year 1812. Drowned in May 1854 on a passage from Kai Kora to this place. This book was sent from Kai Kora to me by my cousin Geo Fyffe in February 1863. Mrs Laird or Elizabeth Fyfe, Wellington NZ'. Below this inscription reads '[There?] were 4 children and my mothers name was Elisabeth Stewart and my Father's name was James Fyffe and their eldest child was Ellen Fyffe. 2 Alexander Robert Michel Stewart Fyffe and Elizabeth and James Fyffe, Elizabeth and James being twins, Wellington, [illeg.?], 1867'. The book is hardbound with an embossed cover.

Alexander Robert Fyffe (known as Robert) established the first shore-based whaling station at Kaikoura in 1842. This was the Waiopuka station, just to the south of Fyffe House. He died in 1854 when his vessel, the Fidèle, capsized on a voyage to Wellington with a cargo of whale oil. His cousin George Fyffe bought the whaling equipment and 'the right to whale' from his estate. George had arrived in New Zealand in 1853. He appears to have lived mainly at Fyffe House, which he expanded during the late 1850s and early 1860s.
