About this object

Container of spermaceti; a red cardboard cylinder with base and lid, with 'CETACEUM' (the pharmaceutical name for spermaceti) hand-written on the side. The cylinder contains white crystalline spermaceti particles.

Spermaceti is a wax contained within the head of a sperm whale, which was extracted either by bucket or by a whaler entering a hole in the whale's head. Spermaceti was used in cosmetics and leatherworking, and as a pharmaceutical product.
