'Band of Hope' temperance pledge

About this object

'Band of Hope' temperance pledge; a rectangular piece of paper printed in colour with a floral design with text, certifying that F W Low is a member of the society, promising 'by divine assistance to abstain from all intoxicating liquors as beverages and discountenance all the causes and practices of Intemperance'. Signed 1913 and numbered 26.

This temperance pledge was signed by Fred Low, son of Maud Low. The Low family occupied Fyffe House from about the 1920s. The temperance movement gained momentum in New Zealand in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Campaigners called for restrictions, and even total prohibition, on the sale of alcohol, seeing it as the root cause of many social ills, including poverty, domestic violence, and 'immorality'. Societies such as Band of Hope urged individuals to sign a pledge of abstinence.
