Ophir Post Office

About this object

Coin; a copper commemorative coin which depicts a steam vessel with the date JUNE 1901 below, and has the text H.M.S. OPHIR IN WHICH THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES CAME TO N.Z. On the obverse is a picture of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and the text CHILDREN'S SOUVENIR. VISIT DUKE & DUCHESS OF CORNWALL TO N.Z. A small hole has been drilled in the top, for hanging.

This coin was made to commemorate the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall to New Zealand in 1901. The visit was part of an Empire tour and followed the opening of the Commonwealth Parliament in Australia. It was also a tributary tour to thank members of the commonwealth for their contribution during the Boer War. The Duke and Duchess left England on 16 March 1901 on board the 'Ophir' and arrived in New Zealand on 11 June.
