Ophir Post Office

Money box

About this object

Money box; rectangular in shape, made from metal. On the front face is a hinged opening with a central escutcheon (key not present). Attached to the top of this opening is a brass plate with the text POST OFFICE SAVINGS BANK / N.Z. The number 16283 is also engraved on the opening face. On the top face is a money slot and a hinged lid, on which is engraved MADE IN [?]. There is a small hole on the right hand face, around which is engraved FOR PAPER MONEY. The entirety is covered with what appears to be a later swirling and stripe decorations, possibly by cleaning the original box which was possibly made from copper. From the inside the coin slot is lined with a series of two rows of nails, to stop coins escaping if tipped upside down.

The Post Office Savings Bank was an important service offered by the local post office from the 1860s. In many small towns and isolated rural communities it was one of the only financial services available. Due to legislation which restricted the rights of other savings banks, by the mid-1950s the Post Office Savings Bank controlled around 80% of the personal savings market.
