Photograph [General Store, Ophir]About this object
Photograph; a black and white, landscape-oriented photograph mounted onto a card backing. The photograph depicts Pitches general store in Ophir. The store is a single storey stone building with a shallow pitched corrugated iron roof and a short chimney. In the window of the store are goods to be purchased. Painted in large letters at the top of the building is GENERAL J. PITCHES MERCHANT. Above the door is painted JOHN PITCHES / ESTABLISHED 1863. Written in blue ballpoint on the bottom edge is 'Ophir'.
Pitches General Store was originally established by John and Sam Pitches. However, Sam died circa 1876 leaving John as the sole proprietor. John was a prominent figure in the town and was elected to the Manuherikia Riding (ridings existed in rural New Zealand in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century as part of larger county councils) in 1876. In 1877 he campaigned (unsuccessfully) for the county offices to be sited at Ophir.
