About this object

A wooden Tukituki or pounder. Also known as a patu muka, kuru, or potuki. It is a badly cracked, with hollow interior and a broken handle ,
Used by Maori for pounding flax, to make clothing, ropes, baskets, fishing nets etc. Also used in food preparation e.g. fern roots.
Found at Mangawhai, at the base of a very old hedge ( on property at 23 Moir St) circa 1990
