About this object

This signalling lamp or heliograph is a wireless solar telegraph that signals by flashes of sunlight (usually morse code) reflected by a mirror. It was used during the day by Hilton James Brown who was a signalman in the Mangawai Home Guard, Signals Corp. circa 1940 - 45. Dick Leslie was the Commander for the district.
It has tripod legs and a mirror on top that can be pivoted. Locally made by James King, at King's Garage, Maungaturoto, Northland.
