About this object

Carpet sweeper; a Ewbank Success brand carpet sweeper. Wooden body and handle. On the top of the body is a colour transfer depicting a lion, the British flag and the words: "British Manufacture".

The carpet sweeper was invented in 1876 by Melville Bissell. They are used to clean rugs and floors via revolving brushes. Carpet sweepers were popular before the introduction of the vacuum cleaner and have been largely superseded by them.
