About this object

Embroidery sampler; made by Martha McDowell in 1858. The sampler includes several alphabets, numbers and the phrase: "Love still shall hold an endless reign / in earth and heav'n above. / When tongues shall cease & prophets fail / and ev'ry gift but love / Martha / McDowells / Sampler 1858". Beneath the text is an embroidered image of a cottage with two chimneys, and a flowering tree with two birds.

Martha McDowell was born in 1840, in Ireland where she completed this sampler in 1858. Three years later she married Glasgow Logan (b. 1839). That same year they had a daughter, Martha Ann, and in 1870 all three travelled to New Zealand where they settled on land in Owaka which Glasgow had purchased in 1863. Martha died in 1924 at the age of 84.
