About this object

Robert Gilmour came to Raglan from New Plymouth in the 1850's.

He was a witness to the Deed of Sale of the Ruapuke Block in 1856 with Ngati Mahanga Chief Te Awaitaia.

He opened his first General Store in 1854.
He was Raglan's Postmaster in 1870, and upon his death in 1875 his son Allan took over. By this time the post office was operating out of Gilmour's General Store.
The Gilmour family had a number of stores in Raglan, serving the district for a further 80 years.
