Agathis australis, Kauri Log

About this object

A large Kauri log.

2.45m circumference 5.17m long

Subject and Association Description

This was a standing 'dry' tree in the Waipoua Forest and the Forest Service were approached by the Old time Transport Preservation Leagueof Matakohe, for a log to display. In 1958 Mamaranui bushman Emmett Olson and several volunteers felled the tree and cut the log into two. The 20ft log was too heavy to haul from the bush so was cut up on site and the pieces were used for boat building. The 16ft log was trucked to Paparoa Show grounds by Waipu timber Co. and placed there on display before eventually finding its way to The Kauri Museum.
