Portrait photograph of 13/148 Lt. Col. James Neil McCarroll of Paparoa who served in WW1 with the Main Body, Auckland Mounted Rifles. He was the OC of the North Auckland Mounted Rifles from 1920-1925 and had a long military career. This photo was taken at the end of his career in the 1940's and on his uniform are is medals including: The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George; Distinguished Service Order and Star; The 1914-1915 Star; The War Medal; The Victory Medal with MiD, George V Silver Jubilee medal 1935. Colonial Auxiliary Forces Decoration, N.Z. Long and Efficient Service Medal, N.Z. Territorial 12 Years Service medal.
