Mount Rochfort is named after the surveyor John Rochfort.
John Rochfort made several surveying trips in the Nelson-West Coast areas. He was in contact with John Gully. Gully painted several images of Mount Cook from Okarito Lagoon from Rochfort's sketches (John Sidney Gully, 1984).
