Abingdon Sword replica; Saxon; England, Oxfordshire, Abingdon-on-Thames, findspot; Hampshire Loan.1
Name/Title
Abingdon Sword replica
About this object
Full size replica of a magnificent sword made in the late Saxon period c. 900AD , which was found in the River Ock in 1874. The elaborate silver decoration of animals and the symbols of the four Christian evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) suggest that its owner was a wealthy Christian. The quality of the sword indicates the importance of the original owner, perhaps a Saxon prince visiting the royal hunting lodge on Andersey Island just across the river from Abingdon Abbey.
