About this object
This photograph is the earliest image of a rugby scene known to exist. It was taken at Rugby School in the mid-nineteenth century and shows two teams of nearly 100 players. Nineteenth century rugby involved huge numbers of players hacking each other with sharpened boots – all completely legal! The white jerseys of Rugby School were adopted by England in the first international in 1871. England have played in white ever since
