Stamford Bridge, the current home of Chelsea Football Club, started out life as an athletics stadium. In 1904 the lease was sold and the new owners planned to make it one of the largest football stadiums in England. The ground was first offered to Fulham Football Club. The Club declined the offer so the owners decided to form their own club, Chelsea. Soon after Chelsea started playing at Stamford Bridge, the ground hosted a rugby match between Middlesex County and the touring New Zealand side. This poster, advertising the forthcoming match proclaims the New Zealander’s first appearance in London. The Rugby Football Union expected large crowds and, without a ground of their own, they hired Stamford Bridge for the match which New Zealand won 34-0.
