The University of Hertfordshire holds over 450 artworks in it’s collection. The ethos of the UH Art Collection is to present modern and contemporary art in places where people study, work and visit. This reflects the University of Hertfordshire’s determination to provide not only an attractive education setting but also one which will inform, enlighten and enhance the life of its students, staff and the local community.
The UH Art Collection was established in 1952, as part of Hertfordshire County Council’s commitment to the post-war programme when the inclusion of artworks by leading British artists was inlcuded within the construction budget of Hatfield Technical College.
The UH Art Collection has a diverse portfolio ranging from photography, textile, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Approximately sixty percent of the work is showcased throughout the University’s campuses and buildings, with a large number of works placed in publicly accessible locations.
The Collection has three key strands: the historical strand, including works by Ben Nicolson, Barbara Hepworth and Reg Bulter; the contemporary artists strand, this strand has been developed through the UH Galleries exhibition programme and includes works by Andy Goldworthy, Alan Davie and Erasmus Schroeter; and the student and staff strand, including works by Professor Marty St James, Sally Freshwater and Diane MacLean.
