About this object
Elkington and Co originated in Birmingham, England. The manufacture is credited with the invention of electroplating, the process of coating a base metal with pure silver. The company in Birmingham patented the process in 1840. The company hallmark consists of ‘E&Co’ crowned within a shield and a company date letter. This food cover’s date letter is a ‘C’, signifying the year 1888. Elkington was a very respected and popular silver manufacture known for their quality. There was an Elkington & Co manufacture in Sydney at 396a Pitt St. where this food cover would have been manufactured and then sold at the retailer at 384 George St.This silver piece is a good representation of electroplating of the 1800s and is aesthetically significant for its design and craftsmanship. This food cover is also rare because it bares the markings of the quarantine station ‘QS’ and would have only been used in quarantine. It would have only been used in the first class precinct. The interpretive potential is also significant because it aids in telling the story of the lifestyle and expectations of the first class guests while in quarantine.
