T. Walker's Patent Harpoon ship log.; Thomas Walker & Son Ltd; After 1861; 13896
Name/Title
T. Walker's Patent Harpoon ship log.
About this object
Instrument designed to measure the speed and distance travelled of a ship through water. The harpoon log is one of the oldest and rarest of all Thomas Walker's distance measuring apparatus. Introduced in 1861, the wheelwork of this type of log is enclosed in a cylindrical case of the same diameter as the body of the rotator or fan, and the latter was brought close up to the register, forming a compact machine and avoiding the use of the 1.83 m line.
Each vane is stamped T. W. with an anchor motif. The entire body of this log spins. The porcelain dials are protected by a ¼ turn of the surrounding housing.
