Gold; pure gold flakes. The flakes have not been polished. Contained in a small glass dish.
Gold was first officially discovered in what would later become the town of Thames in 1867. The first payable mine on the Thames Goldfield was the Shotover, up the Kuranui Creek. A typical Thames 'bonanza', up to 228 ounces of gold per ton was extracted. This was outdone by the Caledonia in 1871, which extracted 12,500 ounces per ton. By the end of mining production, circa 1924, nearly 70 ton of bullion had been recorded for the Thames Special Area.
