About this object
Kauri gum is found naturally in New Zealand and large amounts have been found in the north of the North Island. By the mid-1840s the resin's superior quality for making varnish had been discovered and it was being exported to manufacturers in London and America. This collection of kauri gum specimens originally sat in the office of Cambridge barrister and solicitor, Mr Sam Lewis where it was a novelty for fifty years. Sam Lewis was a veteran of the South African War and came to Cambridge just after he had been admitted to the Bar on 6 March 1906.
