About this object
Drawing in pen, ink, watercolour and gold leaf, in trompe l'oeil style, titled "Stray Leaves". The drawing follows a particular drawing genre known as trompe l’oeil, from the French meaning to deceive the eye. It contains the realism of a photograph with a three dimensional visual depth. It features over 70 different items, supposedly scattered on the artist’s table. The artist W F Gordon worked in the Post Office in Wanganui and included correspondence and postal paraphernalia in his drawing. You can identify envelopes addressed to the Hon John Ballance and Dr Buller, both notable local politicians and businessmen. You will see newspapers and periodicals from around the world. Gordon also gave hints about his private life such as the Parramatta Steamer ticket used during his youth in that town.
